It’s not me – it’s YOU!!

I’ve been a property stylist for well over a decade. In that time, dozens, if not hundreds, of people have approached me with the same (and totally legitimate) question:
“How can you guarantee that I’ll end up with a look for my home that I absolutely love?”
My answer? Because I make sure the styling process is all about YOU!
What I don’t do
There are plenty of home designers out there who have a distinctive approach to their work. Some specialise in those all-monochrome homes you see plastered across celebrity Instagram accounts, while others take a quirkier approach to design and love coming up with wacky furniture and accessories to give rooms a unique aesthetic.
I can deliver either of these results, if you want me to. But I don’t pigeonhole myself into any given style niche. Obviously, I know what I like – but that’s not necessarily what you are going to like, is it?
I don’t see my work as an opportunity to convince you to go down any particular style route.
I don’t limit myself to certain designers, suppliers and artists, just because they’re what I would choose for myself.
What I do do
I buck the trend by shifting the focus away from what I’d like to see in any given room, and onto what’s really going to make you happy.
I do this by following a slightly different discovery method to other stylists.
Instead of just asking you what colours you like and which designers inspire you, I’ll get you to tell me more about how you live, and how you want to feel when you enter each room in your home.
Sometimes, I’ll even ask you to find me an object, an accessory or a piece of artwork that you really adore and explain to me why it means so much to you.
This process gives me a great idea of not only how you will want your design to look, but how you like to use your home. It also gives me a chance to explore which parts of your personality can be reflected in your property’s style and layout – and, crucially, what kind of design is going to make you feel happy, comfortable, safe and secure.
I call this my ‘done with you’ approach. I want to work closely with you and your family to make sure your space flows beautifully, and that everything that is important to you is encapsulated in your home’s design.
Here are a few examples of how I can use my expertise to tailor your property to your own requirements
· If you’re the kind of person who spends a lot of time away from your house with work and social commitments, but likes to flop on the sofa after a busy day, I need to tailor your space to reflect your need for comfort and familiarity. Warm shades, plush soft furnishings, and plenty of meaningful accessories will help to create your very own safe space – but clever storage solutions and a functional layout will make sure the same room(s) can welcome visitors.
· If you love entertaining, your rooms need to be spacious and adaptable enough to cope with crowds of guests. I’ll also need to look at ways to incorporate thick splashes of your personality into your room(s), perhaps by sourcing a few head-turning centre pieces that will be great talking points at dinner parties!
· If you’re looking after kids, then safety and practicality are going to be the aims of the game – at least for the time being. But that doesn’t mean we can’t add a touch of style and grace to your home, and make it a place that everyone can enjoy. I may look at zoning your interiors to create functional spaces for the younger ones, and adult-only spaces that you and your other half can relax in when the kids have gone to bed.
The same rules don’t apply to home staging, though
When it comes to staging a property to attract a sale, I’ll be more assertive in my approach.
You’ll be asking me to style your home to achieve an end result – a great offer that will allow you to move on to the next chapter of your life – so I’m only interested in what your ideal buyer wants to see and feel.
